Old Media Ad Decline could be Permanent
Read the full Wall Street Journal story here.

Here's Our Take On It:
Its good to hear that the media giants are finally recognizing the obvious (at least Disney appears to have, I'm not so sure about News Corp).

The emergence of online media has completely changed the playing field.

For advertisers to be successful in this environment they must micro-advertise, and provide a way for potential customers to interact with companies through their media, in ways they haven't done before.

We don't believe the changes we are seeing in consumer behavior can all be attributed to a weak economy, and we feel it is important for us to address them as more than just cyclical issues, - Walt Disney Company CEO Iger

$6 Billion of Obama Plan to go to Broadband
The House Energy and Commerce Committee has approved a $6 billion broadband plan that would provide grants for those who build out high-speed Internet networks and requires the federal government to create and maintain a public, online broadband inventory map.

The plan is part of the $825 billion economic stimulus package unveiled last week. The entire package is seen as likely to get passed by both the House and Senate without any major changes. Democrats have the numbers in both chambers of Congress and the vigorous support of President Obama, who sees laying down a strong technological foundation as critical to the long term and short term success of the US economy.

Chloe Albanesius of PCMag.com details the $6 billion broadband portion of the package.

Broadband investments are important because they have a tremendous multiplier effect on our economy. - Henry Waxman, chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Online Ad Industry (hopes) to Police Itself
Key players of the Online Advertising Industry are in discussions to create guidelines for how marketers can use behavioral targeting online without violating the privacy of users surfing the web.

The American Association of Advertising Agencies, the Association of National Advertisers, the Direct Marketing Association, the Interactive Advertising Bureau and the Council of Better Business Bureaus all met this week to discuss the issue and to promote the idea that the industry is capable of regulating itself.

Consumer advocacy groups are concerned that the current use of web search and surfing data by marketers violates the privacy of consumers, and have been pushing for government regulation on the matter.

However, whether out of a sense of self interest, in order to avoid government regulation by the new administration, or just because of their better angels, the industry leaders appear primed to release rules governing the use of personal data by advertising agencies online.
